RONNEX is een Belgisch platenlabel, opgericht in 1951, door de Antwerpenaar Albert Van Hoogten. De naam ‘Ronnex’ is afgeleid van ‘Ronny’, de naam van zijn zoon en van zijn platenwinkel. René, de broer van Albert, woont in de jaren ’50 in Amerika, heeft er een muziekuitgeverij en is er de oprichter van het Moonglow label. Via deze ‘Amerikaanse connectie’ staat Albert op de eerste rij wat betreft de import van Amerikaanse platen en kan hij ze hier -via zijn RONNEX label- onder licentie verdelen. Later zal hij ook Amerikaanse juke-boxen invoeren in België. Antwerpen en niet Brussel, is op dat moment de draaischijf van de pop muziek in België!
Zo komt het dat de plaat Long Tall Sally / Slippin’ and Slidin’ van Little Richard al in april 1956 in België en Nederland wordt verdeeld op het Belgische RONNEX label, met serienummer 1142. Straf, als je weet dat de plaat in Amerika pas een maand eerder was uitgebracht op het Speciality label, serienr. XSP-572-45. Michael Hill, vriend van John Lennon, kocht deze 78 toerenplaat met het typische gele label en serienummer 1142, te Amsterdam in april 1956, tijdens een schoolreis. ‘He didn’t know what to say…‘ zegt Hill, die de plaat kort daarna liet horen aan John Lennon en enkele vrienden bij hem thuis. ‘So the record was played again, and again, and again. It made a huge impact on him. It felt good because John was so hard to impress.’ Deze Belgische 78 toeren plaat zal het leven van de jonge John Lennon veranderen. John Lennon bevestigt dit verhaal meermaals: ‘When I heard Long Tall Sally, it was so great, I couldn’t speak…’ Lennon krijgt dus via een Belgische plaat, Long Tall Sally te horen, vele maanden vóór die in Engeland op de markt kwam.
Albert Van Hoogten speelt dus een uitermate belangrijke rol wat betreft de verspreiding van Amerikaanse R&B (en jazz) in België. Daarbij komt nog dat België, ook door Van Hoogten, in de jaren 1953-1956 de nummer één is in de wereld, op het gebied van de import van Amerikaanse jukeboxen. In bijna elk Belgisch café stond er wel een jukebox. Mede daardoor komt Long Tall Sally (ook als 45 toeren Ronnex plaatje te krijgen) van juni tot september 1956 in de Belgische hitparade terecht. Een klein mirakel, wetende dat het nummer pas begin 1957 in de Engelse hitlijsten komt.
Long Tall Sally wordt direct opgenomen in het vaste live repertoire van de jonge Beatles. McCartney, die gek is van het nummer, zal het altijd zingen. The Beatles stonden erg vroeg in hun carrière al op dezelfde affiche met Little Richard (12 oktober ’62 in New Brighton, 28 oktober ’62 in Liverpool en van 1 tot 14 november ’62 in The Star Club, toen ze voor de 4e keer naar Hamburg gingen). Ze maken dan al kennis met de pianist van Little Richard, de toen 16-jarige Billy Preston, met wie ze jaren later nog intensief zullen samenwerken.
Long Tall Sally is de 5e EP van The Beatles (1964).
En… Long Tall Sally is het laatste nummer dat The Beatles brengen tijdens hun laatste live concert op 29 augustus 1966 in San Fransisco.
Ronnex is a Belgian record label, founded in 1951 in Antwerp, by Albert Van Hoogten. The name ‘Ronnex’ is derived from ‘Ronny’, the name of his son and his record shop. René, Albert’s brother, who lives in America in the 1950s, has a music publishing company and is the founder of the Moonglow label. Through this ‘American connection’, Albert is in the front row in terms of importing American records. He distributes them in Belgium through his RONNEX label. Later he will also introduce American juke boxes in Belgium. Antwerp and not Brussels, is at that time the place to be of pop music in Belgium.
Little Richard’s Long Tall Sally / Slippin’ and Slidin’ was released in Belgium and the Netherlands on the Belgian RONNEX label, with serial number 1142. Very surprising, considering that the record in America had only been released a month earlier on the Speciality label, serial number XSP-572-45. Michael Hill, friend of Lennon, bought this Belgian 78T record with the typical yellow label and serial number 1142, in Amsterdam in April 1956, during a school trip. ‘He didn’t know what to say… ‘ says Hill, when John Lennon and some friends listened to the record at his home. ‘So the record was played again, and again, and again. It made a huge impact on him. It felt good because John was so hard to impress. This Belgian 78 T record will change the life of the young John Lennon. John Lennon confirms this story several times: ‘When I heard Long Tall Sally, it was so great, I couldn’t speak…’. Lennon heard Long Tall Sally, through a Belgian record, many months before it came on the market in England!
Albert Van Hoogten plays an extremely important role in the dissemination of American R&B (and jazz) in Belgium. In addition, Belgium, thanks to Van Hoogten, is the number one in the world in the years 1953-1956, in the field of imports of American jukeboxes. In almost every Belgian pub there was a jukebox. As a result, Long Tall Sally (as a 45 T Ronnex record) ends up in the Belgian hit parade from June to September 1956, months before it hit the charts in the UK!
The young Beatles’ included Long Tall Sally in their live repertoire. McCartney, could imitate the voice of Little Richard and will always sing the song. The Beatles shared the same bill with Little Richard (12 october ’62 in New Brighton, 28 october ’62 in Liverpool and from 1 to 14 november ’62 in The Star Club when they went to Hamburg for the 4th time). In Hamburg they met the 16-year-old Billy Preston, pianist of Little Richard, with whom The Beatles will work together in later years.
